A Very Clever Cat
77These Great Cats!
Cats are great animals to have as pets and they are indeed a very clever species!
I have heard many tales of cats doing some really unusual things associated with intelligence of a very high level.
Most of what I have heard sounded so incredible that I even used to think that these stories were highly exaggerated.
Especially the ones which talk about cats entering certain premises undetected in spite of heavy security systems and burglar alarms being installed.
However, I am aware that there are some cats that are exceptionally clever and are almost able to sense the moods of humans around them.
What do you think makes me think so? Well, read on and see for yourself!
Anyone For Stray Cats?
The is the story of a cat, a very clever one! He appeared in our neighborhood all of a sudden.
He simply appeared many months ago out of nowhere and was first discovered when found napping on my neighbor's doorstep.
The guy used to eventually hang around near our house and was somewhat attractive to look at.
It is his picture that appears on this page. He has a relaxed look and always appears totally disinterested in the environment.
Even when I took his picture he knew that something unusual was up, but pretended to be disinterested.
You will notice that his eyes are almost shut.
Well, I did add the very same pictures to my earlier hubs as well just after snapping them, without making any special mention of this cat.
All of a sudden I realised that he deserves a special mention when I remembered his subtle yet dramatic entry into our lives!
A Good Looking Cat - Anybody's Pet
It was during this period of time, we used to hear things toppling in the kitchen.
The sounds which followed indicated that a cat was around.
My sister suggested it could be him since these strange things started happening just after his arrival.
But I simply ruled him out saying that he is too lazy a cat to go around exploring.
Besides, he did not seem to have any worldly interests at all!
I used to even wonder what his reaction would be if a mouse springs up from somewhere and enters his line of vision!
I had my doubts as to whether he would even react!
Although we never got about offering him any food thinking that if he had wanted some he would have shown some kind of interest.
Had he done so, we would have been glad to respond.
However these events went on happening in our kitchen for a quite some time and we were not able to spot the culprit, as he scampers away pretty fast and had been able to avoid detection.
The pots and pans in the kitchen are not always around, but just about an hour before a meal for the food to thaw before going into the micro wave oven, or an hour after a meal for it to simmer down before going into the freezer.
Animal Instinct Versus Our Home Security System!
There are other cats in the neighborhood as well, but almost all of them are timid and rarely come within communicating distance.
It took a lot of investigating to figure out how the guy used to get in.
Eventually, I did discover how he had defeated the security system of our home!
Clever dude indeed! He has been thinking like a human. He really has, if not even better!
Then one fine day, on a Saturday, just before noon, I heard a bit of a noise in the kitchen, which suggested that the "visitor" had entered.
The very first thing I did was to rush to block the passage which I was certain was used by the visitor to enter. You see, I am clever too!
I realized there was a sure indication that he had gotten in and was active in the kitchen.
Having blocked it, I rushed to the kitchen ... and there he was, the "visitor" ... this very same cat! ... My sister was right!
I would never in my wildest dreams have ever suspected him. But there he was, with a totally different expression on his face!
It was totally different from that lazy look he used to sport twenty four hours a day, with his eyes half closed!
There he was, the very same guy who used to pretend to be disinterested in everything around!
His pose indicated that he was about to spring onto something that would in turn cause some pans to topple and hopefully open!
Open his path to the delicacies that we so painstakingly marinated and baked! I understood he was targeting that particular pan!
Pets Are Simply Fun! ... Are They Not?
For the first time I saw him with his eyes wide open, and he really and truly had a guilty look on his face!
For the very first time I saw his face like that! Full of vigor and totally alert, and mind you completely interested!
Disinterested in the surroundings? My foot!
For just a nano-second he thought of springing away and making a run for it, but ... I am dead certain that he was aware that the exit had been blocked by me!
So the clever cat just stood firmly there on the kitchen table, still with the same look on his face, knowing very well that I will definitely not harm him, and not altering his pose or expression, he looked up at me with his eyes still wide open. And now, trying hard not to look guilty, he looked up at me and very seriously said "ngyaew!"

After All, They Are Animals!
I understood perfectly well what "ngyaew" meant.
He meant that he, all by himself, had made a very big discovery, and although the rule says "finders keepers" he magnanimously is inviting me to join him.
Almost as if to say, come on lets both of us check out what's in that pan! Then we'll split it 50/50.
I understood him well! Very well indeed. But, I did not like the idea at all.
Then I could almost hear him say "hey dude! ... although it's finders keepers, my offer still holds good!" "Come on! What are you waiting for?"
Well, I said to him "ngyaeow to you too!"
Then I picked him up and took him downstairs, opened the door and then the gate, and then I placed him on the ground outside and gave him an encouraging push in a direction pointing away from my house.
He did not resist at all! He calmly went through the "pick up and drop" operation!
That was a Saturday, and that pan contained large slices of baked fish to which some extra spice had been added.
Then it had been heated in a slow fire for a certain period of time. Some special herbs had also been added afterwords exactly as instructed in the recipe.
The goodness of the herbs get absorbed gradually while the baked fish simmers! The aroma describes the flavor very well!
"Ngyeaw!"
... concluded
The Offspring Of The Very Clever Cat
The Offspring Of The Offspring!
The very clever cat was eventually adopted by the little girl who lives two doors next. He littered several times afterwards.
One of the kittens of one of his many litters somehow found his way towards us and in time adopted us.
Perhaps he found my sister's response to his appeals for "something to eat" quite lucrative and made this decesion.
From kitten-hood he raced to cat-hood so fast that we hardly noticed. When one of the neighbours asked me "where's the little kitten?" I pointed out to him. "Oh he's grown," she said.
Only then I realized that he was no longer a kitten. He littered twice. In the second litter there were four cute grey catlets!
When they were six weeks old we gave them away. The pictures on the right tell you the story much more clearly. Top to bottom is the sequence you need to follow!

What an enjoyable read! They say that cats own you; they choose you not the other way around... They are amazing creatures to be loved and enjoyed---lucky you...
Smarter than your average cat!!!
Hi quicksand! I had a cat once. He broke my lamp and scratched my windows. He gave me as much trouble as a child. He disappeared after a while. I think he just ran away. You write on any topic very well. Good hub. Keep up the good work.
Great Hub, yes, cats are extremely intelligent creatures. I love cats and enjoyed your every word...
Maybe he is afraid to ask, it is easier just to take, he, he... He is obviously a type who wants to be served....
Aw...cute story! I wondered what happened to him but then I saw in your comment that the neighbor girl adopted him. He is one lucky cat for sure!
lol. You understood the cat? You sure made it seem enjoyable that he comes around taking food, although uninvited.
nice hub!keep writing
helping hands for helpless:AWLH
hehehe, you tell good stories, hehehehehehehe!
Congrats quicksand. I see where you have scored 100. Keep up the good work. I am cheering you on..your number one supporter.
Very Interesting Story really nice......Keep it up
hello quicksamd thanks for creating such a lovely article on kittens. I have a kitten at my home. He is quite naughty and he bothers me a lot.
quicksand my friend - what is it with you and animals? There's always some adventure! Great and entertaining hub :)
hi quicksand,
A cat once adopted my family. He was stuck up in a tree for 3 days, and he was most grateful when we got him down. He was a very beloved cat, and died, I believe, at an old age. I'm guessing he was around 2 or 3 when we, or, when he found us :) I miss him, as I do all of my past pets.
Currently I have a 17 yr old cat and a 5 yr old. They bring much joy to my life.
"Ngyeaw!"??? Must have been an alien!!
quicksand,
You are great story teller. I'm cat lover. I can imagine how smart he is. :D
Great story for anyone who loves cats. My sister had a similar visitor and took him in only to find three others of his cat "family" show up at her door. She now has a full house of very feisty, happy cats! Thanks for sharing.
Yes, she's 17, possibly 18, I lose track :)
Sounds like it's time to take more photos, I'd love to see them.
I should have read this one weeks ago, still better late than never..LOL
that was a great story, about an even greater Cat,I enjoyed liked it!
wow amzazing info about cat another excellent article. You really know how to write good article
Excellent story quicksand. The only different reaction I would have had would be to give the guy some of the fish. But I'm weak when it comes to these guys. One of my cats "patches" shares all of my chicken and fish meals. And forget about Tuna, he goes crazy anytime I open a can. He always ends up with a small share
Oh yes..cats are too clever and when they see food, their look reminds me of the big cat!Scary indeed!
I knew a cat who could take the elevator. It will wait patiently in the lobby and when the elevator doors opened, it will squeeze through your legs and be the first in. And when the doors opened on the 18th floor, it will be the first to rush out.
The cat was so well known that even if nobody was going to the 18th floor, somebody will press the button for it. :)
Cats used to bore me to death until we found a kitten outside our house one night during a storm, brought him in and suddenly, cat stories are great! Thanks for sharing the story of this clever cat. They are smart.
This very clever cat is singing 'click' click' 'click' 'click' 'click' 'click' to the tune of 'We wish you a Merry Christmas' hahahaha... and thanks for leaving your Merry Christmas wishes too as your 'Symbol of Love and Friendship' :)
Long time no see qs, hehehe great hub here eh... I like cats but not very fond of it... Merry Christmas QS, and I thought you were in hiatus for the past few months how is it going Buddy...
You are the Cat Whisperer like Cesar Milan, the dog whisperer :-)
Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays to you and your family. Cheers :-)
I love cats, I have two at home.
Hi quicksand. Merry Christmas from my cat and I, and from the neighbourhood stray, which looks like this cat and talks the same. - It knows that it can always get a feed from me and is very well behaved.
Best wishes,
TOF
greetings quicksand:)
Your story bought back so many memories of my kitties! and like us humans, some kitties truely remarkable, while others are....
Very cute pixs btw:D
Happy New Year, QS, wishing you all the best! Best wishes from my cats as well.
Nice Hub ~ thanks for sharing!
LOL - QS you are too much. I think that little fella definitely deserved some of that fish. You could have given him your sister's share and pretended not to know anything about it later on :)
You know - animals seem to really gravitate towards you. Either you always smell like fish or God is trying to tell you that you should get a cat ;)
Great pictures - that is one handsome cat.
Did not ever think I would be glad to oun a cat antill my son brought a kitten one day. Feels like I can tell some cot stories myself. She defenitely recons that I am "the cat leader here" and behaves properly.Calls to play some cat variation of "hide and seek" and a lot sings more. They are clever beings, no doubt.
NOT A BAD LITTLE STORY! WE HAVE TWO CATS...BOTH OF THEM DUMMER THAN A SACK OF HAMMERS. CHECK OUT MY "FOCUS ON FELINES" HUB. TWO CATS I USED TO HAVE. SOME REALLY CUTE PICS OF THEM.
What a great story! What a smart cat! My name is Murphy, and I'm a cat too (Himalayan). The cat in your story looks a lot like Phebe. She lives here too. Do you know her?
Ahhh, I love cats. Of course they do sleep 12 to 16 hours a day if allowed. At least in the wild.
It's nice to read of experiences like this. They bring a smile to my face.
Thanks for the Hub!
I love those coochie-coochie cats. This was a nice read. Voted up. Liked your other hubs too. Joining your fanclub and would like to invite you to join mine. :)
quicksand,
cats are pretty amazing and yes I think they sense emotion around them! My cat Lenny, I got from an ad for free. He weighed 20 lbs -though I didn't know till I picked him up, but I had to keep him and was tired of looking. He is amazing: he opens doors by jumping up and pushing the latch handle down, he comforts me when I'm upset, and most of all lately he's been staying w/ my parents who are old, sick, kinda lonely. He will lay on my Mom's bed next to her sore leg and she feels better! She calls him the Magical cat =)
Great fun! I love cats. Most dog owners will tell you that cats are boring and too independent, but I can honestly say that I have a cat that walks all around the golf course with me; if I throw a little fluffy tennis ball, he fetches it and drops it at my feet; he loves to swing on the hammock with me and always knows when I need a hug. He is happy to go out in the car and loves visitors. He is intelligent, mischievous, sensitive, jealous, inquisitive and very affectionate - as good as any dog! Thanks for your lovely hub.
Hehehe this hub made me smile. I voted it funny, but I wish I could also vote it CUTE! :)
One thing I love about cats is their Balancing mode when they fall from height. And they're SOOOOOOO CUTE! Love them! :)
I recently adopted a rescued cat/kitten maybe about 11 months old. Thought I'd have to spend some time doing therapy. Well, she has quickly whipped me into shape - whew! I am like her big play toy. When does she sleep? She is right now galloping around with a ball.
Thanks for the lovely kitty photos. They are such amazing creatures.
Rated up!
As a fellow-cat-lover I really enjoyed this Hub. We have also an "Occasional Cat" who has now employed us!
Love and peace
Tony

Cute cat! It's true, we don't give animals the credit due to them. They are however "instinctively wise".
